From 15 January to 18 May 1944, the Allies confronted the Germans to conquer Cassino and the Abbey, military operations known as the Four Battles of Cassino. The fierce resistance put up by the Germans at Cassino attracted worldwide attention. The strategy and military tactics of the two opposing armies are still studied today in military academies.

In the room, five maps summarise the Italian campaign and the four battles of Cassino. In the centre, a model of the region shows the location of each of the villages involved in the action. For the public, the model becomes a large map on which the four battles of Cassino are brought to life through animations and projections.

Opposite, a military diorama reconstructs the bloody crossing of the Rapido River by the 34th Texas Division. A tablet is dedicated to the “Primo Raggruppamento Motorizzato”, the first large unit of the Italian Army that fought alongside the Allies and marked the beginning of the rebirth of the Italian Army. The visit ends with a symbolic image of three soldiers with a commentary on the Second World War. Text – ‘So the whole world had to intervene to restore freedom and the rule of law’.
